NFCA MaxPreps Awards For The Week Ending May 12
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Seniors Morgan Maize of Leyden High School in Franklin Park, Ill., Alison Martino of New Egypt High School in New Egypt, N.J., Lisa Rodrigues of Heritage High School in Brentwood, Calif., junior Tori Finucane of Bishop O'Connell High School in Alexandria, Va. and sophomore Danielle Sprinkle of Ell-Saline High School in Brookville, Kan., have all been named as the High School Players of the Week for their respective regions by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for games played through May 12, 2012.
In the North Region, Maize pitched 21 innings without allowing an earned run to finish the week 3-0. In addition to earning her 8th shutout of the season with 5-0 win over Morton (Ill.), the senior went 3-3 with a double, RBI and 2 runs scored to improve her batting average for the season to .488. On the mound this season Maize owns a 19-6 record and has struck out 141 in 165 innings pitched. The Eagles improved to 23-6 and a #20 ranking in Illinois.
Representing the East Region, Martino went 4-0 on the mound including tossing six perfect innings in a 10-0 win over Maple Shade (N.J.). On the week the senior yielded 6 hits and allowed only one earned run in 27 innings pitched. Along the way she struck out 37 while walking 4 of the 141 batters she faced to finish with a .26 ERA. So far this season she has an ERA of 1.37, with 159 strikeouts in 107.2 innings pitched. The Warriors are 18-2 and are ranked #8 in the state of New Jersey.
From the West Region, Rodrigues extended her pitching streak to 37 scoreless innings with two shutout victories over Freedom (Calif.) and Antioch (Calif.). The senior scattered 7 hits and struck out 14 on her way to improving her record to 20-2 so far this season. Of her 20 wins this year, 12 of them have been shutouts. Rodrigues currently owns a .43 ERA with 156 strikeouts, yielding only 4 extra-base hits in 129 innings pitched. The Patriots are ranked #19 in California.
Out of the South Region, Finucane extended her scoreless string of innings to 68 this week in recording wins over Holy Cross (Md.), Bishop Ireton (Va.) and Elizabeth Seton (Md.) as Bishop O'Connell won its 9th straight Catholic League championship. On the week the junior pitched 18 shutout innings while surrendering just five hits and striking out 28 batters. So far this season an incredible 21 of Finucane's 23 wins have been shutouts. The junior owns a .10 ERA and has struck out 286 of the 464 batters she has faced in 136 innings pitched. With the wins this week, the Knights improved to 24-1 and are currenlty ranked #2 in Maryland.
Rounding out this week's awards from the South Central Region, Sprinkle finished the week with a .857 batting average with 7 RBI, 3 runs scored, and a whopping 2.286 slugging percentage. The sophomore belted 2 doubles and 4 triples as she increased her slugging percentage to 1.293. So far this season Sprinkle is hitting .655 with 25 runs scored and 37 RBI. The wins improved the Cardinals record to 19-1 and a #9 ranking in Kansas
