Cal To Enter Regional Play On Top of Final USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 of Regular Season

Courtesy of Cal Athletic Media RelationsSTARKVILLE, Miss. – California will enter this weekend’s regional action in the 2012 NCAA Division I Softball Championship as the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation, according to the latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 poll that was released by the Association on Tuesday.

The Golden Bears (50-4) garnered all 30 first-place votes for the third time this season, thanks in large part to a series win over No. 2 Arizona State (46-7) last week. California has now topped the rankings for eight consecutive weeks.

Fresh off its SEC tournament championship, Alabama (50-7) remained in third this week, while Big XII regular-season champion Oklahoma (45-8) checked in at fourth. Despite bowing out of the SEC semi-finals to now sixth-ranked Florida (46-11), Tennessee remained at fifth to round out the final top five of the regular season.

The remainder of the final poll of the regular season was largely uneventful, with only marginal movement throughout and no teams entering or exiting for only the fourth time this season.

The final USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 poll of 2012 will be released following the Women’s College World Series on Tuesday, June 11.

The USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll is voted on by 30 NCAA Division I head coaches, one representing each conference.
