Michigan’s Sara Driesenga Named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Nat'l Player of the Week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A very impressive weekend at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., has earned Michigan sophomore pitcher Sara Driesenga the nod as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week for March 19.

The reigning Big Ten Conference’s Pitcher of the Week posted a 3-0 record, a 1.19 ERA and 11 strikeouts over 17.2 innings of effort while recording high-profile victories over then-No. 18 Washington, then-No. 2 Arizona State and then-No. 14 Arizona. The Hudsonville, Mich., native fired a complete-game against the 18th-rated Huskies, allowing a single tally on five hits, while also going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a RBI.  In the upset of the second-ranked Sun Devils, Driesenga tossed 2.1 frames of scoreless relief as the Wolverines rallied from a two-run deficit for a 5-4 triumph.  She also fired a four-hit shutout and was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs during UM’s 9-1 (6 inn.) rout of the No. 14 Wildcats.

Driesenga currently boasts a Big Ten-best 16 wins (16-5 overall) to go along with a 1.48 ERA, 124 strikeouts over a league-high 128 innings of effort, 14 complete games and a .214 batting average against.  At the dish she’s also contributed a .264 mark with four doubles, two HR’s, 19 walks and 25 RBIs.

Next up for No. 14 Michigan is the opening of its Big Ten campaign as the Wolverines host Purdue at the Wilpon Softball Complex in a three-game series over March 22-24.
