New Haven’s Gelardi, Fort Hays State’s Holub Reap Louisville Slugger NFCA DII Nat'l Accolades

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Christina Gelardi of New Haven and Fort Hays State’s Maddie Holub have been selected as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 10, respectively.

A senior infielder from Derby, Conn., Gelardi registered a ridiculous .842 batting average, an .897 on-base percentage and a 1.158 slugging percentage while hitting safely in 16-of-19 at-bats and reaching base successfully in 26 of 29 plate appearances out of her leadoff spot in the Charger line-up. The current Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week also added three doubles, seven stolen bases, a HR and four RBI while playing flawlessly over 15 chances at shortstop. She completed the week having reached base safely in 11 consecutive plate appearances. For the season Gelardi is currently hitting .507 overall with 33 runs scored, 12 steals, five doubles, five HR’s and 20 RBIs.

For the reigning MIAA Pitcher of the Week this selection as Louisville Slugger/NFCA DII National Pitcher of the Week marks the second for Holub in 2013.  It is well deserved, however, as the Hays, Kan., product posted a 4-0 record with a 0.25 ERA and 51 strikeouts over 28 innings of work while also tossing the first perfect game in Fort Hays State softball history. During that perfecto against Northwest Missouri State, the senior struck out a single-game school record 17 of 21 total batters she faced, getting the other four outs via infield pop-up (three) and a soft ground ball to first.  Her perfect effort was made even more impressive in that a day earlier, Holub had thrown 195 total pitches and K’ed 17 during a 2-1 (12 inn.) triumph over then-No. 24 Missouri Western State.  During the DH finale against N.W. Missouri State, Holub fired two innings of hitless relief and also delivered with her bat, lacing a walk-off RBI single during the eighth frame of a 4-3 victory. For the year she currently leads FHSU with an 18-1 overall record, a 0.71 ERA and 215 K’s in 128.1 innings while also guiding her squad at the plate via a team-best .432 batting average, 14 HR’s and 37 RBIs.
