UT-Tyler Overtakes Emory For No. 2 Spot, Montclair State Retains No. 1 Position in NFCA DIII Rankings

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After going 4-0 with a pair of victories against then-No. 14 ranked East Texas Baptist University last week, the University of Texas-Tyler has jumped Emory (38-2) to take over the No. 2 position in the NFCA Division III Top 25 poll this week.

The four victories were not enough for UT-Tyler to overtake Montclair State however, as the Redhawks maintained their No. 1 position by going 6-0 on the week with triumphs against Ramapo College (2-0, 1-0), NYU Poly (6-0, 1-0) and currently No. 20 ranked, The College of New Jersey (2-1, 2-1).

The Emory Eagles (38-2) dropped one position to No. 3 this week after suffering a 5-4 loss in a doubleheader split with Piedmont (Emory won game one 12-2 in 5 inn.).

Salisbury (30-2) took over sole possession of the No. 4 spot after splitting the honors with Trine last week. The Sea Gulls turned in their own 6-0 effort with wins against Wesley (7-0, 10-3), Catholic (4-0, 3-2) and Stevenson (3-0, 3-2).

Trine (23-3) played just two games this past week, earning a doubleheader sweep over Alma (2-1, 8-1) to nab the No. 5 ranking.

After the top five teams, the NFCA Top 25 poll experienced a lot of shakeup as three unranked teams jumped in to claim spots.  Overall, it marked the first regular season poll since the opening week to contain no ties.

Coming in at No. 6 is Tufts (25-2), followed by Linfield (28-5) at No. 7. Redlands (31-7) who shared the No. 7 ranking last week dropped a slot to No. 8. Luther (18-4) and UW-Whitewater (19-1) remained at ninth and 10th, respectively.

At No. 11 is Rowan (28-4), followed by Roanoke (25-5) at No. 12. Coe (23-3) rose two positions to No. 13, while East Texas Baptist University (27-9) claimed the No. 14 spot with St. Thomas (19-5) taking No. 15, up one spot from last week.

Lynchburg (26-7) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (26-10) enter this week at No. 16 and No. 17, respectively, while North Central College (25-1) climbed five positions to 18th. At 21-6 on the season, Central sits at No. 19, followed by The College of New Jersey (21-7) at No. 20.

Previously unranked Christopher Newport (32-11) and Virginia Wesleyan (32-6) re-entered the Top 25 poll at positions No. 21 and No. 22. Chapman (24-10) fell two spots to rest at No. 23, followed by Texas Lutheran (28-8) at No. 24 and Carthage (21-5) at No. 25.

Other teams receiving points from votes this week were Ferrum College (9), Illinois Wesleyan (7), Piedmont (7), Simpson (5), Lebanon Valley (3), UW-Eau Claire (3) and Alvernia (1).

The NFCA Top 25 poll is voted on by a committee of eight NCAA Division III softball coaches representing the eight NCAA softball regions. Voting results reflect the previous week’s performances ending with the Sunday of the respective week’s poll.
