Salisbury Sea Gulls Fly to No. 1 in NFCA Division III Top 25 Poll

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After sweeping the CAC conference tournament, the Sea Gulls of Salisbury (35-2) have climbed the NFCA Division III Top 25 poll to claim the No. 1 position this week.

Salisbury took down York (12-0, five innings) and Frostburg State (3-2, eight innings) before facing off with Frostburg State again in the finals. A narrow 1-0 victory in the title tilt gave Salisbury the CAC Tournament crown and propelled them from No. 3 last week to sole ownership of the No. 1 ranking.

Trine University (33-3) rose three spots to claim the No. 2 spot after handedly beating Albion (22-0, 26-0) and Saint Mary’s (4-0, 22-2).

After sharing the No. 1 overall position with Texas-Tyler last week, Montclair State (37-3) dropped two slots to third.  The Red Hawks was 4-2 last week, falling to William Paterson (1-4) and Rowan (0-3). Montclair State’s victories came against William Paterson (4-3), College of Staten Island (9-1, 7-0) and Rowan (2-1).

Emory (39-3) sat idle, moving up one spot to take the No. 4 position, while Texas-Tyler (41-4) plummeted four positions to land at No. 5. Texas-Tyler was 3-2 on the week, falling 10-9 to East Texas Baptist and again by a 6-2 count to ETBU in the ASC Championship Tournament. Victories for the Patriots came against Concordia (6-0) and Mary Hardin-Baylor (6-0, 9-3).

Linfield (36-6) and Tufts (35-3) held steady at their spots this week, landing again at No. 6 and No. 7 respectively.  Coming off a big victory over Montclair State and holding down No. 8 this week is Rowan (35-5), followed by St. Thomas (31-5) at No. 9.

With two wins over Texas-Tyler, East Texas Baptist University (34-10) moved up two spots to round out the top 10 this week, at No. 10.

Coe (31-5) fell one spot to No. 11, while Central (28-7) moved up two slots to land at No. 12. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (32-11) is 13th, up two spots from last week. UW Whitewater (27-4) and Christopher Newport (32-11) filled in at No. 14 and No. 15, respectively.

Up one position from last week to No. 16 is Virginia Wesleyan (37-6), followed by No. 17 Illinois Wesleyan (28-7), No. 18 Redlands (34-10), No. 19 Carthage (28-8) and lastly, No. 20 Lynchburg (32-11) to fill poll positions 16-20 this week.

The bottom five begins with newcomer No. 21 Susquehanna (31-6), followed by No. 22 Capital (32-8). Fontbonne (30-10) re-entered into the Top 25 rankings this week, landing at No. 23. Simpson (29-9) claimed the No. 24 position, followed by UW Eau Claire (23-6) at No. 25 to close out the poll.

Other teams receiving votes this week were John Carroll (10), North Central (9), Utica (4), Lebanon Valley (3), The College of New Jersey (3), Aurora University (2), Penn State Berks (2), St. John Fisher (2), Alma (1), Luther (1), Middlebury (1) and Richard Stockton (1).

Teams dropping out of the latest poll include Randolph-Macon, Luther and North Central.
