Salisbury Unanimous at No. 1 Position in Final NFCA DIII Regular Season Poll

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Salisbury Sea Gulls (35-2) received all eight first place votes from the NFCA Division III Top 25 committee to retain the No. 1 ranking in the final regular season poll of the 2013 season.

Salisbury heads to Salem, Va., this week to start NCAA Regional play against Penn St.-Altoona. This past week the Sea Gulls were idle after winning the CAC Tournament on April 27.

Coming off a 13-8 victory against Adrian College and wins against Alma and Hope, Trine (36-3) kept the No. 2 ranking in this week’s poll. The Thunder will face off against Anderson on Thursday to start NCAA Regional action.

Montclair State (41-3) held firm at No. 3 after taking wins against Kean (5-4), Rowan (2-0), The College of New Jersey (4-2) and William Patterson (4-2) in the NJAC Conference Tournament. The Red Hawks will host the College of Staten Island in their first regional game. 

The Emory Eagles (39-3) venture to Salem, Va., this week to face off against Neumann in the first round of regionals and with them they carry the No. 4 ranking in this week’s poll. Emory was idle this past week after defeating LaGrange 10-2 on April 20.

Rounding out the top five is UT-Tyler (41-4) at No. 5. The Patriots were idle this week, but are hosting an NCAA Regional in Tyler, Texas, this weekend. UT-Tyler will play Southwestern (TX) in their first regional matchup.

Coming in at No. 6 this week is Linfield (36-6), followed by Tufts (38-3) at No. 7, St. Thomas (38-5) at No. 8 and East Texas Baptist University (34-10) at No. 9. Rounding out the top 10 is No. 10 Rowan (37-7), down two spots from last week.

The No. 11 slot goes to UW-Whitewater (31-5), up three positions from No. 14 last week.

At No. 12 is Coe (32-6), followed by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (32-11) at No. 13. Up one spot and landing at No. 14 is Christopher Newport (32-11), followed by Virginia Wesleyan (38-6) at No. 15.

Central College (28-8) dropped four slots this week to land at No. 16 heading into NCAA Regional play, with Redlands (34-10) climbing one spot to No. 17 behind them. At No. 18 is Luther who received votes in last week’s rankings but was unranked. Lynchburg (32-11) moved up one spot to finish the regular season at No. 19, while Susquehanna rose a single position to take No. 20.

The bottom five opened with Illinois Wesleyan (31-9) at No. 21. Coming in behind IWU is Carthage (30-10) at No. 22, followed by Fontbonne (33-10) at No. 23. UW-Eau Claire rose one spot this week to take the No. 24 position and previously unranked Augustana finished the regular season as the No. 25 team in the poll.

Other teams receiving votes this week included Capital (10), Cortland State (4), Lebanon Valley (4), Washington University St. Louis (3), St. John Fisher (2) and Babson (1).

Dropping from the top 25 poll this week is Simpson who received no votes and was ranked No. 24 last week.

The NFCA Division III Top 25 Poll is voted on by eight NCAA Division III head coaches representing the eight NCAA regions.
