NFCA Announces the NJCAA Division I and II Regional Coaching Staffs of the Year
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association has announced the three winners of both the 2013 NJCAA Division I and II Regional Coaching Staff of the Year awards.
In NJCAA Division I national champion Wallace-State Community College-Hanceville nabbed South Region honors, Iowa Western Community College took Midwest Region accolades, and in the West Region, Odessa College’s staff reaped the award.
NJCAA Division II national championship semifinalist Kirkwood Community College was the choice for Coaching Staff of the Year in the Midwest Region, while Cowley County Community College and Mercyhurst North East received South and East Region accolades, respectively.
Wallace State CC-Hanceville, under the guidance of head coach Jayne Clem, won its second NJCAA DI national title via a 7-3 victory over Salt Lake Community College, completing the 2013 campaign with a 55-12 overall record after registering a 5-1 mark during its run to the title. Iowa Western CC, led by head coach Lana Ross and assistant Betsy Wilcox, wrapped up its campaign at 42-14 overall after advancing to the third round of the national event as the sixth-seed. Odessa College reached the second round as the 14th-seed while concluding its year at 46-21 under the leadership of Joel Prickett.
Guided by head coach Joe Yegge and assistants Kylee Knop, Allie Galvin and Carlie Schnoebelen, Kirkwood CC tallied an impressive 57-5 overall record, and as the third-seed, advanced to the fifth round of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament before being eliminated from the event by head coach Ed Hargrove and assistant Jenny Hoyt’s eventual semifinalist and fourth-seeded Cowley County CC squad (55-8), 3-2. Led by head coach Brian Dewey and assistant Ron Bretz, East Region honoree and ninth-seeded Mercyhurst North East (44-12) advanced to the third round of the national event before dropping a 7-3 decision to 10th-seeded Sauk Valley (Ill.).
The three coaching staffs in both NJCAA Divisions I and II are now eligible for 2013 NJCAA National Coaching Staff of the Year honors in their respective divisions, which will be announced in early June.
