Team USA Blasts Canada in World Cup of Softball VIII Opener, 7-0
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Team USA opened up the General Tire World Cup of Softball with a six-inning, run rule victory over Canada on Thurs., July 11. Sara Nevins (Pinellas Park, Fla.) pitched six innings, allowing just two hits and one walk. She struck out six before giving way to Jessica Moore (Sutter, Calif.) for the final inning.
Valerie Arioto (Pleasanton, Calif.) kick started the scoring with a two-RBI single in the first inning. Team USA stretched the lead out to 4-0 in the second when Raven Chavanne (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) scored after Lauren Chamberlain (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) reached on an error, and Lauren Gibson (Pasadena, Md.) scored on a successful double steal attempt.
Half of Team USA’s eight hits came in those first two innings. Canadian starting pitcher Jenna Caira settled down after allowing the four runs and held Team USA to no hits in her final two innings pitched. Caira yielded to Sara Plourde in the fifth who allowed three runs on four hits with one walk.
Lindsey Ziegenhirt (Elk Grove, Calif.) reached on a walk in the sixth and scored on a single from Taylor Hoagland (Flower Mound, Texas). Gibson belted her first home run of the tournament to give Team USA a 7-0 lead. Moore came on in the bottom of the sixth and held the Canadians scoreless to secure the run-rule victory.
Victoria Haywood and Joey Lye registered Canada’s only hits, while Kelsey Haberl was the only other base runner for Team Canada on the evening.
The Red, White & Blue return to action in the World Cup of Softball on Friday live on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET against Australia.
