Angelo State’s Dunn, Wayne State’s Butler Garner Initial 2014 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Honors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Darian Dunn of Angelo State and Lyndsay Butler of Wayne State University (Mich.) have been selected as the initial 2014 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

A sophomore infielder/outfielder for Angelo State, Dunn powered the Rambelle offense last week at the Woodward WT Invitational by hitting .588 (10-of-17) with three home runs and a staggering 16 RBIs. The reigning Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week also scored eight times, blasted three doubles and slugged at a 1.294 clip as ASU went 4-1 overall. Dunn registered four multi-hit games, including a 2-for-2 effort with a grand slam and five RBIs against Colorado Mesa (received votes in last week’s NFCA poll) and a 3-for-3 performance with two tallies, a double and four RBIs versus Adams State. For the season she is now batting .476 with four doubles and owns team highs in HR’s (six) and RBIs (29).

“Darian has had a great start to the season,” Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. “Last weekend she didn’t miss anything. Morgan (Spearman) and Micherie (Koria) were on base a lot allowing her to drive in a huge number of runs.”

During Wayne State’s opening weekend at the Charger Chillout, Butler, a redshirt freshman from Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, posted a 3-0 record with two complete games, one shutout, a 0.31 ERA, a save and 31 strikeouts over 22 innings. The Warrior hurler scattered six hits and K’ed 13 in shutting out then-No. 7 Indianapolis (3-0) and allowed just four hits over seven frames during a 2-1 triumph over then-No. 15 North Georgia. She entered a match-up against North Alabama with a 3-2 lead, but forced to deal with a one-out, bases loaded situation and proceeded to retire all eight UNA batters she faced with five strikeouts. Butler also led WSU in batting during the event by hitting at a .421 clip (8-for-19).

"Coming off a medical redshirt year, she performed greater than our expectations,” Wayne State head coach Gary Bryce said. “Lyndsay demonstrated she is an excellent thrower."
