Pittsburg State’s Brown, Catawba’s Tysinger Receive Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Honors
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Tiffany Brown of Pittsburg State and Carley Tysinger of Catawba have been selected as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Week for March 5th, respectively.
Brown continued the impressive start to her senior campaign for the Gorillas by batting .588 (10-for-17) with nine runs scored, a double, three stolen bases, four walks, five HR’s and 13 RBIs over five match-ups against Rogers State, Wayne State (NE) and Sioux Falls. The 5-6 utility player from Catoosa, Okla., hit safely in all five contests, and blasted at least one HR during each of the last four while slugging at a 1.520 clip. Perhaps her finest effort came during a 14-2 (5 inn.) rout of Sioux Falls as Brown went 2-for-3 at the dish with a pair of big flies and five RBIs. For the year she currently leads Pittsburg State in batting average (.487), runs scored (19), HR’s (10), RBIs (26), total bases (51), slugging percentage (1.308) and on-base percentage (.580)
“I am very honored to be named the national player of the week,” Brown said. “I think it honors not only my work, but also the work of my teammates. I would not be able to do what I do without each one of them. I am pleased to get this honor, not for myself, but more for my team, coaches and Pittsburg State. I am proud to help give Pittsburg State some national attention.”
“Tiffany is the epitome of hard work and commitment to excellence,” Pittsburg State head coach Elizabeth Economon said. “Although she has been successful in the past, I am very proud of the way she continues to work hard everyday to get even better. She makes everyone around her up her game. Tiffany is very valuable on the offensive side, as well as defense, and is a great asset to our team.”
The South Atlantic Conference’s current pitcher of the week, Tysinger guided the Indians from the circle by going 4-0 with a 0.26 ERA and 48 strikeouts over 26.2 innings of work. The Lexington, N.C., native opened the week by striking out 14 over 6.2 frames of relief while also going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored as Catawba defeated Limestone, 7-3. After twirling a three-hit, complete game shutout with 13 K’s in topping GRU-Augusta (4-0), the sophomore right hander continued her impressive work by going 1-for-2 with a RBI double while permitting just three hits over seven frames and striking out a dozen as CC upset No. 6 Armstrong Atlantic, 5-1. Her final victory for the week came as a result of 4.1 innings of one-hit relief against Flagler with seven K’s. For the year Tysinger holds a perfect 8-0 mark with a miniscule 0.30 ERA and 81 K’s over 46 frames of effort, while also rating second on the squad in batting with a .378 average.
“It’s very exciting to find out I am the national pitcher of the week,” Tysinger said. “Our team has meshed really well, and we have lots of chemistry. It is nice to be in the circle and know you have a good defense behind you. Our hitting has also picked up and has been giving us some great support as well.”
“This is a great honor for Carley and Catawba to gain national recognition,” Catawba head coach Nan Whitley said. “She is a total team player and a tough competitor. She goes above and beyond to make herself better and is becoming an all-around player by not only being a top pitcher, but also a very good hitter.”
