Midwestern State’s Vandewater & Wayne State’s (MI) Butler Nab Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II Awards

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Katy Vandewater of Midwestern State and Lyndsay Butler of Wayne State (MI) have been selected as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 30th, respectively.

The reigning Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week, Vandewater batted an impressive .889 (8-for-9) overall with four runs scored, three doubles, three HR’s and 12 RBIs during a commanding three-game league sweep of Tarleton State. The junior shortstop christened the weekend by going a combined 5-for-6 with three doubles, a HR and seven RBIs during a doubleheader sweep of the TexAnns (Fri., April 25). The Arlington, Texas, product wrapped up her outstanding performance on April 26 by tallying a 3-for-3 effort with two runs scored, two HR’s and five RBIs as the Mustangs completed the sweep, 8-1. For the season Vandewater is currently hitting at a .363 clip with 32 runs scored, 10 doubles, 13 HR’s and a squad-high 50 RBIs.

“It is an honor to receive national recognition, especially after performing so well as a team last weekend,” Vandewater said. “We're hoping to build off of this momentum heading into postseason play.”

“She (Katy) has grown as a player,” Midwestern State head coach Brady Tigert said. “I am very excited to work with her again next year. She has so much fun out there, and the success that she is having is great to see.”

The first repeat selection as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Pitcher of the Week of the 2014 campaign, Butler was truly at the top of her game last week from both the circle and at the plate by registering a perfect 4-0 record with a 0.00 ERA, a save, two no-hitters and 43 strikeouts over just 27.2 innings of work while hitting .462 (12-for-26) with seven runs scored, five doubles, a HR and nine RBIs. The current GLIAC Pitcher of the Week topped Ferris State during her initial start of the week on Tues., April 22, permitting just two hits over six innings with six strikeouts in an 11-3 triumph. The next day the redshirt freshman struck out 13 while no-hitting Lake Erie over six frames as WSU prevailed 8-0. Her pitching dominance carried over to the weekend as the Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, native three-hit Lake Superior and K’ed 11 during a 2-0 win and no-hit Northwood (MI) over six innings with eight strikeouts to wrap up the week via an 8-0 victory. Thus far in 2014 Butler is 18-4 overall with a miniscule 0.65 ERA and 226 strikeouts over 151.2 innings, while also hitting .364 with 14 extra-base hits and 23 RBIs.

"Lyndsay had an outstanding performance last week with two no-hitters," said Wayne State (MI) head coach Gary Bryce, who is in his 33rd season leading the Warriors. "She has had a terrific season making NFCA National Pitcher of the Week right from the get go, and to make it again at the end of the year is a testament to her pitching. Because of Lyndsay and Briana Lee we are second in the nation in ERA."
