Cal Baptist Named NAIA National Coaching Staff of the Year

The Cal Baptist coaching staff of head coach Mike Smith along with assistant coaches Bill Baber and Kristie Martinez have been named the NAIA National Coaching Staff of the Year, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced on Tuesday.

Smith just completed his sixth season with the Lancers. A year after winning a school-record 60 games, Cal Baptist did even better this year, winning one more game and capturing the school’s first national championship. Under Smith, the Lancers have earned six straight national championship tournament berths. This season, Cal Baptist won its sixth straight Golden State Athletic Conference championship.

The Cal Baptist coaching staff was also selected as the West Region NAIA Coaching Staff of the Year.

Regional Coaching Staff of the Year winners have also been announced. They are as follows:

East Region – William Carey University (42-7)

Head Coach: Wendy Hogue,
Assistant Coach: Craig Fletcher,
Graudate Assistants: Megan Pittman, Jessie Pierce

Hogue just completed her fifth season with the Crusaders. Carey won a school-record 42 games in 2009 and advanced to the national championship tournament for a second straight season and second time ever. The Crusaders recorded a 2-1 record in pool play in this year's championship tournament.

Great Lakes Region — Bethel College (Indiana) (52-7)

Head Coach: Anna Welsh, Assistant Coaches: Jeff Welsh, Samantha Creakbuam, Stephanie Hochstetler

Welsh just completed her fifth season with the Pilots. Bethel won a school-record 52 games in 2009 and advanced to the national championship tournament for a third straight season. Under Welsh, Bethel has won four straight Mid-Central College Conference championships. This season, the Pilots finished the season with a 2-1 record in pool play at the national championship tournament.

Midwest Region — Missouri Valley College (34-23)

Head Coach: Josh Miller
Assistant Coach: Stephanie Hey

Miller just completed his second season with the Vikings. Missouri Valley enjoyed a record-setting year as the Vikings won 34 games and the Heart of America Conference Tournament championship. That victory meant the Vikings advanced to the national championship tournament for the first time in school history. At the tournament, Missouri Valley compiled a 1-2 record in pool play.

Southwest Region — Oklahoma City University (53-9)

Head Coach: Phil McSpadden
Assistant Coach: Bobbi Bridges

McSpadden just completed his 22nd season as head coach of the Stars and 23rd season at the school. OCU won the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament championship and advanced to the national championship tournament for a 21st time. This season, OCU missed out on a potential ninth national championship with a semifinalist finish at the national championships.

Southwest Region — St. Gregory's University (43-16)

Head Coach: Heather A. Shanahan
Assistant Coach: Bill Foutch

Shanhan led St. Gregory's to its best finish in school history this season. The Cavs earned an at-large berth to the national championship tournament and did very well with that opportunity, dropping a 3-2 deicision to California Baptist in the championship game. SGU lost to the national champions twice, each by one run, in the tournament. It was the deepest advancement for St. Gregory's in school history.
