NCAA Div. II Championship: Alabama-Huntsville Advances to Championship Game

SALEM, VA – Alabama-Huntsville took an early lead and never looked back, posting a 10-0, five-inning win over Angelo State in the second semifinal game on Sunday afternoon at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.

UAH (54-5) will advance to Monday’s NCAA Championship game, where the Chargers will face the winner of the upcoming Lock Haven-North Georgia rematch. Angelo State finishes its 2009 season with a 50-10 record.

Alabama Huntsville wasted little time in denting the scoreboard in game 12 of the tournament. Kristina Prater was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Kelli Long. Beth Lawson was then walked intentionally to put runners on first and second with one out. After Caitlin Lee grounded out, Emily Roach singled down the left field line to score Prater and Lawson and give UAH a 2-0 lead after one half inning.

UAH added to its lead in the top of the second with 6 more runs. Whitney Hawkins singled to center to start the inning. Kathryn Whitlock reached on a fielder's choice and Erin Duke was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kristina Prater singled in the first run of the inning. After a groundout, Beth Lawson cleared the bases with a double to extend the lead to 6-0. Caitlin Lee then doubled down the line to score Lawson. Emily Roach singled to put runners on first and third and an illegal pitch scored Lee and moved Lawson to second.

Huntsville added two more runs in the top of the fourth on a 2 RBI single from Whitney Hawkins.

Whitney Hawkins improved to 21-0 on the season. She pitched all 5 innings, giving up 3 hits. Hawkins struck out 2 and walked 1. Chelsea Nelson suffered the loss for Angelo State. She worked only 1 1/3 innings, giving up 8 runs on 6 hits.
