NCAA Div. II Championship: Winona State Eliminates Le Moyne

SALEM, VA – Winona State used a late-inning rally to cobble together a 2-1 victory over Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon at the James I. Moyer Complex on the third day of the NCAA Division II Softball Championship. The game was played in just 73 minutes.

Winona State (50-12) advances to play Angelo State at approximately 6 pm tonight. Le Moyne’s 2009 season concludes with a 45-13 record.

Le Moyne drew first blood, plating a run in the second inning. The one-out rally consisted of a single from shortstop Barbara Shea followed by a double to left from Caitlin O’Neill to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead.

That score held until the bottom of the fifth inning. Winona State shortstop Callie Givens led off the inning with a single to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch before a two-out single from leadoff hitter Terra Halron scored Givens from second base. After Annie Stuedemann reached base on a fielding error, Halron would score on a double down the left field line before the inning ended with Stuedemann being gunned down at the plate with Winona State holding a 2-1 lead.

Winning pitcher Stacey Struzynski struck out five without issuing a walk. She scattered six hits and allowed one run while improving to 28-6 on the season. Losing pitcher Jenna Vanacore from Le Moyne struck out three, walked one and allowed two runs (one earned) over her six innings in the circle. She finishes the season with a record of 23-5.
