NCAA Div. II Championship: Greyhounds Eliminate Dixie State, 3-0

SALEM, VA – The Indianapolis Greyhounds put together three runs on six hits to defeat Dixie State by a 3-0 margin in the opening game of Saturday’s play at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship at the James I. Moyer Complex.

Indianapolis improves to 37-20 with the victory and advances to play Lock Haven at approximately 4 pm tonight. Dixie State completes its 2009 season with a 41-13 record.

The Greyhounds were first to score, putting up a pair of runs in the second inning. Shortstop Carmen Martinez started the two-out rally with a walk, followed by a Chrissy Stephens single, giving the Greyhounds runners on the corners. After Stephens advanced (defensive indifference) to second base, Lindsey Gustine roped a double to the wall in right field, scoring Martinez and Stephens to give Indianapolis the early 2-0 lead.

Jessica Breeden added a third run in the top of the third inning, blasting her seventh home run of the season over the centerfield to make the score 3-0.

That was all the offense that starting pitcher Megan Russell would need. Russell improved to 20-11 with the victory, striking out seven and scattering six hits without issuing a walk.

Dixie State starter Lauren Folta fell to 15-6 with the loss, striking out two, walking two while allowing three runs on five hits. Reliever Brittnie Whipple held the Greyhounds to one hit, walking three with one strikeout, over her four innings in the circle.
