NCAA Div. II Championship: Kristin Erb Ties NCAA Shutout Record; Lock Haven Defeats Le Moyne, 5-0

SALEM, VA – Lock Haven senior pitcher Kristin Erb tossed her 97th career shutout to tie the NCAA Division II career shutout record in the final game of the opening day of play at the NCAA Division II Champion ship as The Haven defeated Le Moyne by a 5-0 margin.

Lock Haven improves to 47-5 on the season and advances to play Alabama-Huntsville at 2 pm on Friday. Le Moyne (45-12) falls to the losers bracket and will play an elimination game at 2 pm on Saturday against Winona State.

Lock Haven attacked the offensive game methodically, scoring in each of the first five innings.

In the first, leadoff hitter Sarah Norris led off with a single to left, was sacrificed to second base by Kristin Erb and scored on a single to right by shortstop Ilia Lopez to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 lead.

It was a similar story in the second inning. Right fielder Erica Eisenbise drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second by Brittany Muthard and scored on a double by Nancy O’Connor to make the score 2-0 in Lock Haven’s favor. A two-out single by Norris chased starting pitcher Jenna Vanacore, who was replaced in the circle by Jennifer Farrelly, who got Erb out to end the inning.

The song remained the same in the third inning. Lopez singled to lead off the inning, was sacrificed to second by catcher Amanda Roosa and scored on a two-out single by second baseman Amanda Gutmaker to bring the lead to 3-0.

Erb’s no-hit bid was broken up in the top of the fourth inning as Farrelly helped her own cause with a two-out single for the first Dolphins hit of the night, but was unable to advance.

Norris gave the Lady Eagles four of a kind on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, connecting on a two-out solo home run to increase the lead to 4-0.

A fifth straight “1” went up on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning as Gutmaker drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on a Muthard single to make the score 5-0.

In the sixth, The Haven loaded the bases with a Juliea Popovich bunt single, Norris single and Erb walk, but the Dolphins worked out of the jam, leaving the score 5-0.

Erb improves to 46-4 on the season, striking out seven and scattering four hits without a walk on the day. Le Moyne starter Jenna Vanacore pitched 1-2/3 innings, allowing two runs and fell to 23-4 on the season. Relief pitcher Jennifer Farrelly struck out two over her 4-1/3 innings in the circle, walking three and allowing three runs on six hits.
