NCAA Div. II Championship: UAH Sprints to 1-0 Win

SALEM, VA – It took just 76 minutes for Alabama-Huntsville to record a 1-0 victory over Winona State in the third game of the 2009 NCAA Division II Softball Championship at the James I. Moyer Complex.

With the victory, UAH (52-5) advances to play the winner of the Lock Haven-Le Moyne game at 2 pm tomorrow. Winona State (49-12) falls to the losers bracket and will face the Lock Haven-Le Moyne loser in an elimination game at 2 pm on Saturday.

The Chargers offense threatened in the second inning, opening with singles from Caitlin Lee and Emily Roach. The pair was sacrificed into scoring position by Whitney Schrimsher, but were unable to advance past second and third.

The scoreless tie held until the bottom of the fifth inning. Shortstop Kathryn Whitlock cranked a leadoff double to left center, was sacrificed to third by centerfielder Erin Duke and scored on a single to right field by catcher Kristina Prater, giving UAH the 1-0 lead.

The Chargers starting pitcher Whintey Hawkins twirled a no-hitter for Alabama-Huntsville through six innings, but was relieved by Alex Lewis after giving up a leadoff single in the top of the seventh inning. Hawkins struck out seven to improve to 19-0 on the season while Lewis pitched one inning to earn her 17th victory of the season. Winona State’s Stacey Struzynski struck out three during her six innings in the circle, falling to 27-6 with the loss.
