DIII Championship: Solid Pitching Performance Carries Tufts

A solid pitching performance coupled with the long ball proved to be the winning formula for Tufts in a 4-0 elimination game over UT-Tyler at the Division III national championship in Montclair, N.J.

Sophomore Izzie Santone gave up only four hits in the complete-game victory, throwing just 53 pitches to the 26 batters she faced. She received all the offense she needed courtesy of two two-run shots from infielders Lena Cantone and Casey Sullivan.

Sullivan homered in the top of the second after a Maya Ripecky single, while Cantone drove the ball just inside the right field foul pole in the fourth, again scoring Ripecky.

"Give credit to her [Santone]; she had a great game and we didn't have our best at-bats; you just can't do that at the World Series," UT-Tyler head coach Mike Reed said.

UT-Tyler finishes at 39-10, while Tufts moves on to face Gustavus Adolphus tonight at 7:30 p.m.
