DIII Championship: Messiah Freshman Overpowers Gustavus

Messiah freshman Jessica Rhoads was more than Gustavus Adolphus could handle in a winner's bracket game at the Division III national championship in Montclair, N.J. The pitcher threw a two-hitter and knocked in both runs in the 2-0 victory.

Rhoads gave up a hit to all-American Rachael Click in the first inning and then retired 17 straight before giving up her second hit of the game, also to Click.

Messiah would get all the offense it needed in the first, when Abi Buchler led off with a single. Rebekkah Funk would reach on a bunt single, and both Buchler and Funk would advance to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Rhoads would drive both of them home with a single to right center.

Gustavus will face Salisbury in an elimination game at Noon, while Messiah will face Coe in a battle of unbeatens at 2:30 p.m.
