DIII Championship: Salisbury Sends Cortland State Home

It wasn't pretty, but it was survival. Salisbury scored two unearned runs in a 2-1 victory over Cortland State at the Division III national championship. Cortland State finishes its season at 44-9.

Despite having as many hits as errors (four), Salisbury finished with some solid defense and pitching to survive another day in the double-elimination tournament.

Cortland State got on the board in the top of the first, courtesy of a single by Donnalyn Cross and an RBI-single by Sammi Dieffenbach. Salisbury would answer in the bottom half of the inning, as Cortland State again struggled on defense early. After a leadoff walk, Kelly Waskewicz would move to second and third by a throwing error and sacrifice bunt and score on a wild pitch.

The winning run came in the bottom of the third; Meghan O'Gara singled to left and advanced to third on another throwing error and a sacrifice bunt. Brittany Lounge singled to left to score O'Gara.

A Cortland State threat in the seventh was extinguished by some outstanding defense from right fielder Casey Zaino, who threw out the tying run at the plate after backing up a throwing error and then making a diving catch in right center to finish off the Red Dragons.

Salisbury will face Gustavus Adolphus in another elimination game at Noon tomorrow.
