DIII Championship: Gustavus Adolphus Takes Game One

It only takes one. After five innings, even though the score was just 5-1, the University of Texas at Tyler appeared to be in control of game one at the Division III national championship in Montclair, N.J. Then came the bottom of the sixth. Gustavus Adolphus scored five runs on three hits and two errors and would finish out UT-Tyler in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.

Emily Klein doubled to start the inning and would advance to third on a grounder to short by Jenny Ewert; a slight hesitation and then a throwing error allowed Ewert to advance to second on the play. After a walk by Rachael Click to load the bases, a weak fly ball by Emily Wendorff was misplayed by UT-Tyler left fielder Megan Roo Richardson. The single scored Klein, and Ewert scored on the error, which left Click and Wendorrf both in scoring position for a sacrifice fly by Andrea Brown to right field. After a fielder's choice out at home, a two-run home run by Kirsten Prunty would provide an insurmountable lead for Gustavus.

Stacy Shepherd would take the loss for UT-Tyler, giving up four earned runs on four hits; she was replaced by Kelsey Ainsworth in the middle of the pivotal sixth inning. Betsie Collins got the win for Gustavus, going six innings. UT-Tyler threatened in several innings but scored just one in the top of the fifth on a Whitney Wyly double to center.

Gustavus Adolphus won its 40th game of the season with the victory, moving to 40-7, while UT-Tyler drops to 38-9. Gustavus will play the winner of game 2 tomorrow at 4 p.m., while Tyler will play in an elimination game at 11 a.m.
