Lubbock Christian Takes Home NAIA Leadoff Classic Championship

 Lee and William Carey went 2-0 on the final day of play at the NFCA NAIA Leadoff Classic in Panama City Beach, Fla., on Sunday. Lubbock Christian, which completed its tournament schedule on Saturday, took home the team championship trophy as the only team to complete tournament play undefeated (6-0). The Chaparrals placed three student-athletes on the All-Tournament Team including snagging Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Pitcher honors. 

Lee University won both of its Sunday contests, defeating Mobile 9-7 before topping Walsh by a 12-3 margin in five innings. In the day’s opener, Sarah Mitchell struck out five to earn the win in the circle. The Flames pounded out 14 hits on the day and were led offensively by Danielle Balough who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, as did catcher Bobbi Easler. Designated Player Krista Goodlet added the lone home run of the game. 

In the team’s second game of the day, Lee pounded out another dozen hits. Johana Gomez went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Kaitlyn Grosch was 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored. Brittany Rowe struck out five as she got the win with Caitlin Beshears coming in to pitch the final inning of the game in relief. 

William Carey opened the day with a 9-4 win over Faulkner. Alyssa Boutwell got the win, striking out six during her 6.1 innings in the circle. Offensively, Judy Barber had three RBI, while Jenna Erickson was 2-for-3 with two RBI. In the nightcap, the Lady Crusaders topped Auburn-Montgomery by a 2-1 margin. Kelsey Jo Smith struck out four while allowing just one hit and an earned run to get the win. Brittany Fuller came in and finished the game for the Lady Crusaders.
