Ohio State, Northwestern, UMass Remains Undefeated at Leadoff Classic

Ohio State, Northwestern and UMass all remain undefeated following Saturday’s abbreviated play at the 2009 NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic. Alabama, which departed the tournament early while Columbus, Ga., was absorbing well over three inches of rain on Saturday, completed their tournament play with a 1-0 record.

In the first round of games in Saturday’s abbreviated schedule, Northwestern took to the field and posted the first of its two victories on the night, recording an 11-0 victory over Long Island in five innings before defeating Hofstra by a 3-1 margin. The Wildcats are hitting .292 as a team with a tournament-best 14 runs scored.

UMass also remained undefeated, dispatching DePaul by a 2-0 score. Minutewomen senior pitcher Brandice Balschmiter has pitched all 14 innings for UMass without allowing a run.

Ohio State, which was the offensive story of Friday’s play, continued to win on Saturday, posting a 5-0 win over Illinois State, the one other undefeated team in Friday’s play.
