WCWS: Bruins Defeat Wildcats, 1-0

OKLAHOMA CITY – UCLA, the second seeded team in this year’s Women’s College World Series, posted an opening day 1-0 victory over Arizona at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium to conclude play on Thursday night.

The Bruins (51-7) advance to face Arizona State on Friday at approximately 8 pm CDT while Arizona (41-18) falls to the losers bracket and will play Arizona State at roughly 1 pm CDT on Saturday in an elimination game.

The action started early as UCLA suffered a defensive error on the first play of the game, allowing Brittany Lastrapes to reach second on the error. After a one-out intentional walk to Jenae Leles, UCLA’s Angelica Selden posted the first of her nine strikeouts on the night and got Stacie Chambers to ground out to end the inning and the threat.

Arizona returned the favor in the bottom of the first inning, allowing leadoff hitter Katie Schroeder to reach on a two-base error in the bottom of the first. After senior left fielder Krista Colburn sacrificed Schroeder to third, Amanda Kamekona connected on an RBI single to left center, scoring Schroeder and giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

That was all the offense produced in the game. Arizona finished with three hits and UCLA completed the game with two.

Selden earned the win in the circle for UCLA, improving to 29-3. She struck out nine and walked two while scattering three hits and pitching around three defensive errors.

Taryne Mowatt suffered the loss for the Wildcats, falling to 29-14 on the season. She struck out five and walked two, allowing two hits and one unearned run.
