Humboldt State Downs Emporia State at NCAA Division II Championship

HOUSTON – A five-hit, three-run fourth inning gave Humboldt State all the offense it would need to defeat Emporia State on Thursday afternoon at Memorial Park.

Humboldt State (55-18) advances to play the winner of tomorrow morning’s game between Lock Haven and Ferris State. The Lumberjacks will next take the field at 5:30 pm on Friday. Emporia State (55-18) will play Francis Marion at 10 am Friday.

Humboldt State got on the board with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lumberjacks second baseman Caitlin Klug started the rally with a double, followed by an RBI double from first baseman Natalie Galletly to give HSU the 1-0 lead. A bunt single by first baseman Marissa Slattery advanced Galletly to third and gave the Lumberjacks runners on the corners with no outs. Third baseman Francesca West put a second run on the board with an RBI single, followed by a successful sacrifice bunt by designated player Ashley Oltjenbruns put two runners in scoring position for centerfielder Chrissy Motzny. Motzny connected on the Lumberjacks fifth hit of the inning, an RBI single, to give Humboldt State the 3-0 lead

That was all the offense that Lizzy Prescott needed as she pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out nine without issuing a walk. Prescott improves to 46-11 on the season while Emporia State’s Samantha Sheeley falls to 29-7 with the loss.
