Michigan, Tennessee Remain Undefeated at NFCA Leadoff Classic

Two teams remain undefeated at the conclusion of the second day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. Both Michigan and Tennessee have won all four of their games at the South Commons Complex in Columbus, Ga.

A tournament champion will be determined based on overall record, head-to-head competition, run differential between common opponents (maximum of eight in one game), run differential against all competition (maximum of eight in one game), fewest runs allowed, most runs scored and coin toss. Sunday’s schedule sees No. 12 Michigan facing No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette while No. 4 Tennessee faces Nebraska.

At the conclusion of Saturday’s schedule, the Wolverines lead in run differential with 14 (17 scored, 3 allowed) to the Lady Vols 13 (26 scored, 13 allowed). Four teams with 3-1 records are also still in the race for the tournament championship. That list includes No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 19 DePaul, Illinois State and Nebraska.

Notable on Saturday, Louisiana-Lafayette’s 8-0 win over Tennessee Tech featured a Ragin’ Cajuns offensive performance that included six hits as a team, five of which were home runs. Holly Tankersley, who was the top hitter of the day on Friday, had a home run in that game, as did her teammates Gabriele Bridges and Lana Bowers, who hit two homers apiece.

In Tennessee’s win over Florida State, Jennifer Lapicki led the Lady Vols, going 3-for-4 with four RBI. For the Wolverines, in their nightcap win over Winthrop, pitcher Nikki Nemitz tossed a complete-game four-hitter, allowing one run with eight strikeouts to improve to 7-1 on the season.
