Lady Vols' Callahan Named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of Week

Tennessee’s Tonya Callahan has been named Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week for the week ending May 6, the association announced Wednesday.

Callahan played a key role in UT’s two-game sweep of top-ranked Alabama that clinched the Lady Vols their first SEC regular season title, hitting .833 (5-for-6) with a home run, six RBIs and two intentional walks.

In a series-opening 9-2 win over the Crimson Tide, Callahan collected three hits in four at-bats and drove in five runs against UA ace Chrissy Owens. The Holden, Mo., native drove in three runs on a pair of singles and another pair of runs on a double as Tennessee claimed the opening game of the set.

In the series finale, Callahan registered a perfect 2-for-2 mark that included her 10th home run of the season, a run scored and a walk. The Lady Vols slugger closed out the weekend with a 1.500 slugging percentage and an .889 on-base percentage after reaching base eight straight times.
