TWIFP: Lock Haven Homers to Fight MS

Lock Haven has the ability to hit the long ball, and the Lady Eagles are putting that ability to good use by raising money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society through a program called "Knock MS Out of the Park."

LHU has been accepting donations all season for each home run hit. The team has also pledged to donate five dollars for every home run hit by the team this season. The No. 2 team in the nation had hit 44 round-trippers through the first 39 games of the year.

Garland Garners Record
Garland Cooper has a potent bat, and she swung her way into the Big Ten record books last week with her 52nd-career home run that broke the conference’s all-time record.

Her home run, the 20th of the season for the senior, came in a 5-1 win over Iowa, snapping the previous record of 51 set by Minnesota’s Jordanne Nygren from 1999-2003.

Coopers 52 round-trippers place her 22nd in NCAA Division I history. The record-setting home run, ironically, came in the same game in which pitcher Eileen Canney notched her 1,000th-career strikeout.

McGowan Closes the Door
Brianne McGowan preserved Ta’Tyana McElroy’s 3-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara last week by retiring the last three batters to notch her fifth save of the season.

The save made McGowan OSU’s all-time saves leader, breaking the previous best of 12 set from 2001-04 by Monica Hoffman.

Tide Rolls to No. 1
Alabama had been ranked as high as second this season, but this week brought about a new best for the program — a No. 1 national ranking.

The Tide took over the top spot in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Poll after Tennessee dropped a pair of games to LSU last weekend. The two teams switched spots as the Lady Vols landed in second.

The Tide’s first challenge as the No. 1 team? A visit to Knoxville for a three-game set against the second-ranked Lady Vols.

Cougars Hoist Hardware
Houston has enjoyed a stellar season already, but the year got better last week as the Cougars claimed their first-ever Conference USA regular season title with a series triumph over East Carolina.

Robinson Lifts Rainbow Wahine
Hawaii has put together its best season in school history, and some of that success can be attributed to the slugging of Kate Robinson.

In last weekend’s series sweep of Utah State, Robinson broke the Hawaii single-season home run record with two home runs on the weekend that brought her season total to 18.

Choctaws Rising
Another team enjoying its best season in school history is Division III’s Mississippi College.

The Choctaws had won 32 of their last 36 games heading into the conference tournament to claim the program’s first American Southwest Conference Eastern Division title.

The Choctaws dropped an opening-round decision to eventual winner Hardin-Simmons, who claimed a second straight tournament title, before rallying to advance to the semifinal where they fell to Louisiana College, the No. 7 team in the country.

Union Sets Record… Again
The past two seasons, Union University has set a new school record for home runs in a season. Now it’s three straight years as the team hit two more home runs in a double-header sweep of University of the Cumberlands to give it 39 long balls on the season.

The previous record stood at 37. This year’s record might be difficult to catch as the Lady Bulldogs still had five regular season games and the postseason to play.
