SALEM, Ore. -- Amanda Bayless retired the final four batters of the game and got two runs in the top of the seventh as St. Mary's pulled away for a 3-1 win over an upset-minded Shippensburg team at the 2003 NCAA Division II Softball Championships.

Bayless replaced All-American Kym Kling with two outs in the sixth inning. The Raiders had runners on second and third and were threatening to take the lead. Bayless caught Breanna Eck looking with an 0-2 riseball to end the scoring threat.

Kirstin Simmons delivered a two-out, two run double in the top of the seventh to give the Rattlers the 3-1 advantage, and Bayless retired the side to pick up her 18th victory of the season.

"I had a bad outing my first time out," said Bayless. "It was great to come in and make up for it by getting the job done. That's what relief pitchers do."

St. Mary's took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Teri Moreno singled in Jennifer Survant after a leadoff double. Shippensburg tied the game in the fourth when Anna Corr delivered a two out RBI single through the left side to score Beth Rudai.

St. Mary's will face UC Davis at either noon or 2:30 PDT Sunday, depending on the result of the Aggies game with Georgia College and State University.
