NFCA HIGH SCHOOL ALL-REGION & ALL-AMERICAN SELECTION PROCEDURES
All-Region Teams Nomination Procedures:
- The nominees must be from the member coach’s high school team.
- Member coaches may not nominate athletes from other institutions.
- A coach may nominate up to 8 players.
- A player may only be nominated for one position.
- Coaches should ensure that a nominee’s statistics meet the minimum requirements outlined below and that all requested information is supplied.
- Incomplete nomination forms will not be considered.
The following guidelines will apply for each position:
Pitchers: Must have played in a minimum of 40% of the total games
- Pitching stats are first consideration
- Defensive stats are second consideration
- Offensive stats are third consideration
Defensive Positions: Must have played in a minimum of 75% of the total games at the nominated position
- Defensive and offensive stats will have equal weight
- For catchers, stats include the number of stolen base attempts (SBA) and the number of times caught stealing (CS). A catcher will be credited with an SBA every time a runner attempts to steal a base. If the runner is caught stealing as a result of a throw, it is a CS. Pick-offs are recorded in a separate category.
Utility Player: Must have played at least two or more positions in at least 50% of the total games
- All stats must be included
- Breakdown should be indicated on the nominating form (Example: 10/SS. 12/0F, 14/DP; Summary: 36 games, 3 positions played)
- Defensive stats for each position played must be provided
All-Region Team Selection Procedures:
- The five regional committees with oversight from an appointed National Consultant will each select an All-Region first and second team from the nominations submitted. The committee will use a template of 4-pitchers, 2-catchers, 1-1B, 1-2B, 1-3B, 1-SS, 3-OF, 1-UT, and 2 additional athletes of any position as a guide for their selections. It should be noted, this by position breakout will only serve as a model and the committee will select the most qualified (32) student-athletes per region who will make up the first-team (16 student-athletes) and second-team (16 student-athletes) for that region.
- Based on the number of nominations received and the strength of the supporting statistical information included on the student-athlete nomination form, the regional committee may elect to name fewer than 16 athletes to the second team All-Region. However, a full 16 athletes must be assigned to the second team All-Region in order to have a third team All-Region. The regional committe may elect to name fewer than 16 athletes to the third team All-Region.
- When the All-Region teams are announced, all athletes selected will be listed according to the position in which they were nominated.
- Once the All-Region teams have been named, the first-team All-Region selections from each of the five regions will be eligible for All-American selection.
- NFCA members from states that do not have an elected member serving on the All-American Committee may be contacted and asked to speak on behalf of their student-athletes and answer questions concerning the level of competition and strength of schedule from their respective states during the regional calls. These non-elected members will have a voice, but no vote in the selection and naming of athletes.
All-American Team Selection Procedures:
- The chosen Chair Representative from each of the five regions, with oversight by the appointed National Consultant, will select the All-American first, second, and third teams as well as the New Balance Golden Shoe and Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year recipients.
- Eligible student-athlete statistics will be sent to the five regional Chairs and the National Consultant in advance of the call.
- As with the All-Region selections, the committee will use a template of 4-pitchers, 2-catchers, 1-1B, 1-2B, 1-3B, 1-SS, 3-OF, 1-UT, and 2 additional athletes of any position as a guide for their selections. Again, it should be noted, this by position breakout will only serve as a model and the committee will select the most qualified athletes to the All-American teams regardless of position.
Miscellaneous notes:
Sheilah Gulas, NFCA Coach Emeriti Representative, will serve as the National Consultant to the High School All-American Committee. The National Consultant will be familiar with the High School All-American process and procedures will provide oversight during the five regional calls and will ensure consistency in how student-athletes are evaluated during the regional discussions. In addition, he/she will facilitate the All-American call comprised of the five regional Chair Representatives.
