OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The 2012 Women’s College World Series has already been one of the most attended in the 31-year history of the event. It has already broken several records with several more within its grasp.
Through six sessions of this year’s WCWS, the total attendance is 52,574. That is 4,151 more fans than last year’s 48,423 attendance at the same stage of the tournament. Last year’s event set a total attendance record of 67,631.
This year’s WCWS features four of the top seven single-session attendance figures in event history, including the top three. Prior to this year, the single-session attendance record was 9,080 (Session 5 in 2010). That figure has been surpassed three times in this year’s event; 9,209 in Friday night’s Session 3, 9,310 in Saturday night’s Session 5 and 9,167 in Sunday’s Session 6.
So far the average attendance per session this season is 8,762. The existing per-session record for an entire WCWS is 7,515, set in 2011. Individual session attendance records have been set in each of this year’s six sessions.
This year’s total six-session attendance of 52,574 is already higher than the total attendance figure of 25 of the previous 30 WCWS’s.
