ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Nineteenth-ranked Angelo State improved to 4-0 in opening round games of the national championship tournament by downing No. 4 Metro State, 10-3, in the final game of the first day of the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships on Thursday night at Heritage Park in St. Joseph.
The Rambelles (49-13) had little problem getting their offense going as they tallied 11 hits on the evening, with five going for extra bases including a home run by senior Megan Pumphrey in the second.
2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American second baseman Alix Dean led Angelo in the game by going 3-for-4 with two runs, a RBI and a double. The Rambelles (49-13) scored in every inning but the fifth and score multiple runs in four of those innings.
Metro State (51-5) broke up the shutout bid in the third when the nation's leading home run hitter Tara Mickelson went yard for the 24th time this season with a two-run bomb that tightened the score at 5-2.
The Roadrunners scored for the final time in the fifth inning when Mickelson hit a double down the right field line that drove in senior Sara Rusch, but it was not enough as Angelo went on to win by a seven run margin.
Micksleson finished the game with two hits in three at-bats and accounted for all of the Roadrunners runs in the contest.
Senior Chelsea Nelson tossed a complete game for the Rambelles in the win and allowed just three runs off of six hits with four strikeouts. Getting the loss for Metro was senior Christie Robinson who allowed three runs off of three hits in 1.1 innings.
Angelo State will now take on No. 3 Hawaii Pacific on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CDT, while Metro State will return to play on Saturday when they meet No. 7 Wayne State (MI) at 2:30 p.m. CDT in an elimination game.
