UCLA senior pitcher Anjelica Selden (Vacaville, Calif.) has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Player of the Week for the week ending February 24, it was announced on Tuesday.
Selden had a part in four of the Bruins’ five wins at the Palm Springs Classic last weekend, producing wins over three NFCA top-25 opponents to go along with a save and 38 strikeouts in 22 innings. With their perfect 5-0 record at the tournament, UCLA moved up four spots from No. 11 to No. 7 in the latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll.
After picking up the save against Massachusetts on Friday afternoon, Selden followed with a 13-strikeout performance in a two-hitter against 18th-ranked Georgia that evening. On Saturday, Selden did not walk a batter and struck out seven, limiting then-No. 10 Baylor to four hits in a 6-1 victory.
On Sunday, Selden set a new career high for strikeouts in a seven-inning game with 17 against second-ranked Northwestern, giving up just four hits in a 6-2 win over the Wildcats. Selden struck out the side in the third, fifth and seventh innings and fanned the final four batters of the game.
Selden improved to 7-1 on the season with 78 strikeouts in 52 innings. She also has only four walks on the season.
