ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.-- Abby Augdahl's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted St. Cloud State to a 1-0 win over Northern Kentucky in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Division II Softball Championships.
Augdahl's game winner was one of only three hits for the Huskies. SCSU's Nicole Webb (29-6) gave up just two hits, both in the third inning. NKU sophomore Krystal Lewallen (31-4) scattered three hits over six innings.
Northern Kentucky had the game's first scoring chance in the third inning. Rachelle Vogelpohl singled just out of the reach of Husky catcher Jessica Preiner, and was sacrificed to second by Kara Lorenz.
Ricki Rothbauer then delivered a single to center field, but center fielder Cally Stewart delivered a strike to home to retire Vogelpohl at the plate.
Another play at the plate would decide the game in the sixth. St. Cloud State took advantage of a pair of NKU errors to load the bases with no outs. Angie Berg line out and Vogelpohl doubled up Abby Velta on third base for a key double play.
Augdahl then took a 1-2 pitch from LeWallen and drove it up the middle to score Stewart from second base. Stewart slid around Megan Owens' attempted tag for the game's only run. Webb retired the side in the seventh to preserve the victory.
The Huskies (41-13) advance to face Western New Mexico, who was a 1-0 winner over Caldwell earlier Thursday. The Norse (54-6) will face Caldwell in an elimination game at 11:00 a.m. Friday.
