OKLAHOMA CITY – It’s back-to-back titles for the University of Florida. The Gators (60-7) defeated Michigan, 4-1 in the “winner take all” game of the Women’s College World Series Championship finals. Florida becomes just the third program to repeat as national champions and the first since Arizona in 2006 and 2007.

 

WCWS Most Outstanding Player, Lauren Haeger knocked in the first run of the game and went the distance in a complete-game effort. She struck out five, walked one and finished the 2015 campaign with a 32-2 record. At the plate, she was 1-for-1 with two intentional walks and finished the WCWS, 8-for-14 with seven RBI and five runs scored.

Haeger joins elite company - Danielle Lawrie (Washington) and Keilani Ricketts (Oklahoma)-  as the just the USA Softball Player of Year to also be named WCWS Most Outstanding Player.

Florida raced out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and added a run in the second for a 4-0 lead. Haeger opened the scoring with a flare up the middle that plated all-tournament selection Kelsey Stewart with the first run of the game. With two outs, Taylor Fuller dropped a two-run single in to leftcenter for the three-run advantage 

Stewart tacked on another run in the second with a RBI double to left.

Michigan (60-8) was able to get on the board in the fifth courtesy of a RBI single by junior Sierra Romero. With two outs and runners on first and second, Romero laced one into left center that allowed Tera Blanco to just beat the throw home and cut the Wolverines’ deficit to 4-1.

Both teams had chances to put more runs on the board as they combined for 19 runners left on base – Florida (11) & Michigan (8).

Freshman Abby Ramirez was 2-for-3 for the Wolverines as they were held to five hits. Senior Haylie Wagner suffered the defeat. She allowed her first runs of the tournament (4) on four hits in two total innings. Sophomore Megan Betsa provided four frames of shutout relief with eight strikeouts.

Justin McLean posted two of the Gators’ five hits.
