LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Buford scored a win over a ranked opponent and remained undefeated to strengthen its hold on the No. 1 spot in the GameChanger/NFCA Summer-Fall High School Top 25 Coaches Poll, the Association announced on Thursday afternoon.
The (9-0) Wolves have won 41 straight games and 49 of their last 50, including the Georgia 6A state title last season, which was their third state crown in the last four years, and 13th overall.
So far this season, Buford has overmatched its opponents by a 107-28 margin, which includes last Thursday’s 14-6 victory over then-No. 10 Dacula (13-3). The Wolves face Mill Creek later today.
Unbeaten Oklahoma schools Lone Grove (17-0) and Blanchard (18-0) remained at second and third, and were joined this week by fellow Sooner team Enid (18-0), which gained one place to fourth after staying perfect as well. Colorado’s Windsor (4-0) rounds out the top five.
Newcomer Blair (8-2) jumped into the mix at No. 6, after continuing its strong start. The Bears are positioned just ahead of Hastings (8-1), which Blair handled easily, 17-3, in their matchup on Aug. 22.
Missouri’s Grain Valley (5-0) made the biggest move of the week, going from No. 24 to eighth, after rolling to the championship of the Greater Kansas City Tournament over the weekend. The Eagles outscored their five opponents at that event, 46-5.
Four other teams are new to the rankings this week. Missouri’s Liberty North (4-2) and Platte County (6-1) are 12th and 13th, respectively, while Nebraska added Millard West (9-3) and Elkhorn South (10-1) at Nos. 17 and 18.
State rankings submitted by the NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the GameChanger/NFCA Summer-Fall High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule. Five states — Colorado, Georgia, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Missouri — play a fall fastpitch schedule, while Iowa recently completed its summer season.
