After 24 games, only six of the nation’s top NJCAA Division I & II programs remained undefeated. Blinn, Chattanooga St., Chipola, Tallahassee, Odessa and Santa Fe each finished the first day of competition with perfect 2-0 records.
Blinn wrapped up their second win of the day in the nightcap in tremendous fashion via a walk-off two run blast from freshman Britney Krchnak (Sealy, Texas) that gave the Buccaneers a 6-5 win over the hometown team, Gulf Coast. Krchnak’s homer in the seventh was her second of the game, after a solo knock to start the fifth.
On the defensive side of things, Santa Fe shined bright while being the only team left in the tournament that has yet to allow a run. Sophomore Colena Lazar (Dade City, Fla.) threw two shutouts on the day, including a no-hitter against defending Division II National Champion Muskegon. On the day, Lazar allowed just two hits and five walks, while fanning 18 batters.
Play in the 2011 NFCA Junior College Leadoff Classic will resume on Saturday at Frank Brown at 10 a.m. with the final two games of pool play in the morning and the beginning of bracket play in evening. After the completion of pool play, teams will put into Gold, Silver and Bronze brackets where they will play either two or three games.
