PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - The Blinn College Buccaneers topped Chattanooga State, 3-2, on Sunday at Frank Brown Park in Panama City Beach to finish the 2011 NFCA Junior College Leadoff Classic with a 6-0 record and claim the crown in the Gold Championship Bracket. 

Sophomore Alyssa Vordenbaum allowed just two runs, while striking out seven to help Blinn claim the overall tournament championship. Following the game, Blinn’s Sara Vaughn was named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Chattanooga’s Misha Aldridge was named as the Most Valuable Pitcher. 

Vaughn finished the tournament by going 12-for-19 on the weekend, while Aldridge ender her tournament with a record of 3-0 with 17 strikeouts. Also named to the All-Tournament team from Blinn and Chattanooga were Michelle Dowling and Brittany Cooley, respectively. 

In the Silver Bracket championship, it was Wallace State getting the 9-2 win over Iowa Western to claim the crown in the bracket. Megan Christiansen was also named to the All-Tournament team, as she finished the weekend with a .762 batting average and 11 RBI. Her teammate, Whitney Brown, was also featured on the team, as was Iowa Western’s Daleigh Fossler. 

Wrapping up championship play was the Bronze bracket where San Jacinto grabbed a 2-1 eight-inning victory over Temple. Temple’s All-Tournament selection was Emily Leib who finished the weekend with a 1.32 ERA and 37 strikeouts.
