MONTCLAIR, N.J.- Coe College will get a chance to extract revenge against Messiah College for the 2-0 loss it suffered Sunday night, as it picked up a win over Gustavus Adolphus Monday afternoon to advance to the final round of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship at Montclair State University Softball Stadium, 4-0.

The Kohawks wasted no time in jumping out to a lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first on a single by junior left fielder Chelsea Zaugg and a sac bunt by senior first baseman Amy Hanse. The Golden Gusties fought back, though, cutting the lead to 2-1 on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Emily Wendorff in the bottom half of the inning.

Gustavus Adolphus tied the game in strange fashion in the bottom of the third, when senior center fielder Emily Klein stole second and third base, and then scored on a throwing error by Kohawks senior catcher Megan Jack. However, Coe retook the lead on an RBI single by freshman designated player Katie King in fifth, and padded it on an double by junior second baseman Mackenzie Lang in the sixth.

Kohawks senior pitcher Sonja Schwenker was outstanding once again, tossing a four-hitter in which she allowed just one hit after the third inning. She was pulled in the seventh inning, but re-entered two batters later and picked up the game’s final out when Klein popped out to Lang in right field.

The Kohawks will battle Messiah Monday at 2:30 p.m.; a Coe victory will ensure a final rematch Tuesday at 11 a.m., while a win by the Falcons will clinch the national title.
