The first two innings went much the way the final four innings of the
last game - scoreless. Salisbury would get on top in the third on a leadoff walk from Lisa Gentilella,
a base hit from Kate Garland who stole second easily, a Rosie Aley intentional walk,a Kristy Shaffer single, and a fly ball from Erin Ruest to score two. Salisbury would pad its lead by one in the top of the fourth on a base hit from Megan Ellzy, a sacrifice bunt from Kim Rementer and a base hit from Kate Garland. But it wouldn't be enough. Central scored one in the bottom of the fifth on a Sara Tuttle infield base hit, a Holly Edwards walk, a Kristin Wares base hit to load the bases with no outs, and a base hit from Bri Kuyper. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kris Hughes rocked a grand slam to put Central up 5-3. It was looking as if Salisbury may tie it up in the seventh with a Garland base hit and a Katie Mullinix base hit. But the Sea Gulls couldn't turn it around when Rosie Aley ground out and Kristy Shaffer struck out to end the game.
SALISBURY HEAD COACH MARGIE KNIGHT ON THE TEAM'S GAME:
"It didn't work out the way we wanted. It was a real dog fight.
We left a few too many on base and they took advantage of every opportunity
they had. They earned it without a doubt. Lacey (Lister) had a fabulous season
and she got us here. (Hughes) got a good pitch. They made contact when they
LACEY LISTER ON PITCHING ALMOST TWO COMPLETE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES:
"I could have (pitched) more, but they needed to see something different. I
wanted to stay in. The ball hung and she hit and the bases (happened to be)
"I know this team really wanted it. We play with a lot of heart. It was close.
We played two great games. They came out with it."
CENTRAL HEAD COACH GEORGE WARES ON THE CHAMPIONSHIP WIN: "I think the rain
delays were to our advantage because we had a day to recover from the first
loss. I though after the first game that the momentum switched to us, but
then they got up two. We were scraping to stay in the game after that."
LIBBY HYSELL ON THE TEAM'S FINISH AND HER GAME:
"I knew I had three outs in me, but it felt pretty automatic."
KRIS HUGHES ON HER GRAND SLAM THAT PUT CENTRAL UP 5-3:
"I can't describe the feeling. To be the last at-bat of my senior year just
feels great. I was just looking for a pitch to hit. I just wanted to beat it
in the dirt...I thought it was going to hit the fence. The pitching was coming
in slower, but Lacey was still doing a good job."
