STARKVILLE, Miss. – El Diamante (Calif.) unseated previous No. 1 Estrealla Foothills (Ariz.) to ascend to the top of the latest USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25 poll, that was released by the Association on Thursday. The Miners improved their record to 33-1 on the season after defeating Golden West 1-0 on a no-hitter this past week.
Shaking up the top five this week and coming in at No. 2 is Alexander Central (N.C.), which is coming off a playoff win to enter post-season with a record of 26-1. Norco (Calif.) (26-2) moved up to third by tacking on two more wins and claiming the regular season Big VIII championship.
Coming in at the fourth spot in this week’s poll was Topsail (N.C) (25-0), which has sailed through the first two rounds of the North Carolina 2A state playoffs with two shutout wins. Rounding out the top five is The Woodlands (Texas) (29-4), which is still vying for their second consecutive Texas 5A state championship.
Five teams made their 2012 debuts in the poll this week, with John Curtis Christian (La.) leading the way at No. 22. Also moving into the rankings for the first time in 2012 were Amador Valley (Calif.), Bryant (Ark.), Katy (Texas) and Glenbard North (Ill.) at 23rd, 24th and a tie for 25th, respectively.
With the addition of five new teams to the rankings this week, four teams were forced out of the poll in the latest edition. Previous No. 17 Plano Senior (Texas), No. 18 Hahnville (La.), No. 19 St. Amant (La.), No. 25 Sparkman (Ala.) all fell out of the rankings.
