HOUSTON – Emporia State scored six unearned runs as the Hornets defeated C.W. Post by a 6-0 margin in the final game of the first day at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship.
Emporia State (45-15) advances to face Humboldt State in a winners bracket game on Thursday at 5:30 pm CDT, while C.W. Post (48-15) falls to the losers bracket and will play Lock Haven Thurdsay at 12:30 pm CDT.
Emporia State opened the scoring early as leadoff hitter and left fielder Jessie Wiard reached on a two-base error. She went to second on a bunt single by second baseman Angela Mahan, giving the Hornets runners on the corners with no outs. First baseman Jennifer Dace then connected on an RBI single to give Emporia State the 1-0 lead.
The Hornets struck again in the fourth inning as catcher Aubree Brattin singled and went to third on a throwing error on the at-bat of centerfielder Jenna Potter. A bunt single from Wiard plated Brattin for a 2-0 lead. Dace followed with a two-run single to make the score 4-0 after three and a half innings of play.
A fifth run came across in the top of the sixth inning as errors once again plagued C.W. Post. Brattin reached from the leadoff spot on an error and advanced to second on a ground out by Jenna Potter. An RBI single by Mahan plated Brattin for a 5-0 lead, and Mahan would come around to score on an RBI fielders choice by Miranda Campbell to give the Hornets a 6-0 lead.
Samantha Yodowitz took the loss for C.W. Post, falling to 30-7 on the season. Samantha Sheeley pitched a six-hit shutout for Emporia State, striking out nine without allowing a walk.
