CLEARWATER, Fla. – After the opening day of play at the NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla., Michigan, Southern Illinois, UCF and James Madison make up the list of four remaining unbeatens in the field of 14 squads.
The No. 15 Wolverines opened up their stay in the event with a 3-1 victory over No. 12 Louisiana-Lafayette before outlasting a rugged Illinois State team in 10 innings, 11-9. Southern Illinois registered a pair of one-run triumphs, 8-7 over UC Davis and 5-4 over No. 17 USF. UCF topped Indiana, 3-2 (8 inn.), and finished off its day with a 4-0 blanking of Fordham. James Madison defeated DePaul (7-5) and UC Davis (4-3, 8 inn.) in recording a 2-0 mark.
One of the biggest surprises of the initial day was No. 17 USF dropping both its match-ups with losses to Southern Illinois and No. 12 Louisiana-Lafayette.
Play kicks-off on Sat., Feb. 23, at 10:30 a.m. ET at the Eddie C. Moore Complex with Indiana facing James Madison and Illinois State battling Massachusetts.
The NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic features a round-robin style format with the championship going to the team with the best winning percentage on the weekend. In case of ties, a series of pre-determined tiebreakers will be used to decide winners. Individual performances will also be honored at the tournament with a Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Pitcher award, as well as an All-Tournament team.
Single day tickets will be available for $10 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under. Full tournament passes will also be available for $25 for adults and $15 for children. Special group rates of $5 will also be available for groups of 10 or more youth or military personnel.
