ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Nicole Webb scattered three hits over her second complete game of the tournament as St. Cloud State defeated Western New Mexico 2-0 at the NCAA Division II Softball Championships.
Webb (30-6) tossed her third consecutive shutout of the NCAA postseason. She outdueled Mustang ace Angela Slaugh (38-7) who also gave up just three hits.
The Huskies jumped on the board in the third inning, when Jessica Preiner reached on a two-out error by Slaugh. Abby Velta got one of her two hits on the day and scored Preiner from second base.
Brooke Gentzler led off the fourth with a line drive home run over the center field wall. Slaugh then retired 12 in a row to end the game, but the Mustang offense could not take advantage of scoring opportunities.
The best of which came in the WNMU half of the fifth, when the Mustangs had two runners on with one out. Webb retired the final two batters of the frame, and only allowed one more base runner the rest of the game.
St. Cloud State (42-13) awaits the Florida Southern/Angelo State winner while Western New Mexico (45-12) will face Shippensburg in an elimination game on Saturday.
