ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Freshman Morgan Johnson hit a solo walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of Sunday's semi-final at the 2010 NCAA DII Championship to send second-ranked Valdosta State to Monday's National Championship game with a 3-2 win over No. 19 Angelo State at Heritage Park in St. Joseph.
Valdosta struck first in the game during the first inning when senior Alyssa Shirey belted a ball down the left field line to drive in sophomore Amber Shaw and give her team a 1-0 lead.
The Blazers extended their lead later in the game during the fifth inning when sophomore Marti Littlefield scored junior Melessa Jackson with a single to center field to push Valdosta's lead out to 2-0.
However in the top of the sixth, Angelo (50-15) used a pair of doubles from juniors Kaycee Taylor and Alix Dean to tie the game at two all.
Valdosta was unable to score in the sixth and Angelo could not get any offense going in the top of the seventh, setting the stage for Johnson's game-winnning home run.
Junior Margaret Carter got the win for Valdosta (51-8) by allowing no runs off of no hits over 1.2 innings of work.
For the Rambelles, the loss went to senior Chelsea Nelson who allowed two earned runs off of eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
With the win Carter improves to 24-5 on the season, while Nelson ends her year at 29-10.
Valdosta now waits on the winner of Sunday's other semi-final between No. 3 Hawaii Pacific and No. 4 Metro State. The 2010 NCAA Division National Championship game will begin at 2 p.m. on Monday and will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports.
