Georgia sophomore pitcher Kate Gaskill (Murrieta, Calif.) has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Player of the Week for the week ending March 16, it was announced on Tuesday.

Gaskill went 4-0 last week with a 0.00 ERA over 23 innings pitched while striking out 39 batters and walking just two. From the second inning vs North Florida on March 12 through the first five batters against South Carolina on March 16, Gaskill retired 41 consecutive batters, 24 of which were strikeouts.

That streak included a perfect game tossed in the second game of a doubleheader against South Carolina on March 15. In that contest, Gaskill retired the first 15 Gamecock batters then sat through a one-hour, 34-minute delay caused by a tornado warning and rain in the Athens, Ga., area, before returning to the diamond to record the final six outs. Four of those final six outs were strikeouts.

She allowed just 10 hits in her four appearances last week, limiting opponents to a .130 batting average. Gaskill earned the win in each of the four games she played last week and recorded every out in three of the four games. With no outs in the first inning against North Florida, Gaskill came in to the game in relief and recorded all 21 outs. Saturday’s perfect game was the first for a Georgia pitcher since 2004 and saw Gaskill record a season-high 13 strikeouts.

For her efforts, Gaskill was also named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week.
