St. Mary's pitcher/designated player Kym Kling has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Player of the Week for the week of April 14-20.
The junior from San Antonio had an outstanding week, leading the defending national champion Rattlers to a 6-0 mark which included a doubleheader sweep of then-No. 2 Angelo State. A 2002 NFCA All-American, Kling accounted for 21 (nine runs scored, 12 RBIs) of her team's 43 runs. She hit a walk-off three-run home run to defeat Angelo State. For the week, Kling went 7-for-15 (.467) with two home runs. On the mound, Kling went 4-0 with three complete games. She pitched a no hitter against Angelo State, and only allowed one base runner on an error. In four games last week, Kling scattered 11 hits and gave up just one earned run in 24 innings of work. For the season, she leads the Rattlers both at the plate and in the circle. Kling is hitting a .409 clip with a team leading 20 doubles and 44 RBIs. She is 25-2 as a pitcher with a 0.93 ERA. On Tuesday, Kling became the first player ever to garner both Hearland Conference pitcher of the week and hitter of the week honors in the same week.
