Kennesaw State got a solid pitching performance from Brittany Matthews and a two-run fourth inning to claim a 2-0 win over Bloomsburg at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship in Salem, Va.
The Owls won their seventh consecutive elimination game in the NCAA postseason. They will face the winner of this afternoon’s St. Mary’s- San Francisco State game in another elimination game tonight.
Lori Cassell led off the decisive fourth inning for Kennesaw State with a double and Keri McKee followed with a single that was mishandled by Bloomsburg left fielder Stef Kline, allowing Cassell to score from second base.
Husky starter Amanda Smith then retired the next two batters before Kelley Cowart and Chelce Culberson notched back-to-back singles to take a 2-0 lead.
Matthews carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Sara Roba singled to left center. The Huskies managed to get two runners on in the seventh inning, but Owls’ center fielder Kelley Cowart made a great catch off of Amanda Breon’s bat to end the game.
