ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.—The Florida Southern Moccasins got a two-run homer from Jackie Leppla and Megan Brown made it stand up as they defeated the St. Cloud State Huskies 2-0 in the 2004 NCAA Division II National Softball Tournament on Sunday.
Leppla connected off Huskie starter Nicole Webb (30-8) in the third inning. Jesse Shepherd had a bunt single with one out and trotted home one out later on Leppla’s blast to left to give Florida Southern (54-7) a 2-0 lead.
Brown (35-4) tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out three and walking three, to pick up the win. Webb was saddled with the loss, allowing the two runs on eight hits, walking two with four strike outs.
The Huskies (42-15) best shot came in the second inning. Megan Fuches drew a lead-off walk and Jessica Swartout followed with a single. After Fuches stole third and Swartout stole second on separate plays, the Huskies had runners at second and third with one out. But Brown struck out Jessica Preiner and got Abby Velta to ground out to short to end the threat.
The Mocs advance to play Angelo State at 7:00 pm EDT in the championship game, but will need to defeat the Rambelles twice to take the title.
